I HAVE spoken more than once of the “hereditary craftsman,” a phrase justified by the hereditary fixity of social function under the caste system. But it is worth while to consider the point in greater detail. It is often assumed that the skill of the “hereditary craftsman”depends upon the direct inheritance of his father’s individual skill.
