Black cotton soil presents some difficult building problems. Owing to the fact that it shrinks and cracks in a somewhat unpredictable manner, foundations for normal buildings have to be very deep and strong and on that account are very expensive. This house, put up by the Government of Bhopal, does not have any foundaitons. It is a R.C.C. frame structure on reinforced cement concrete raft. The rigidity of the frame protects it against the idiosyncrasies of the soil.
